shadow art fair

The Shadow Art Fair is a juried event that allows local artists to exhibit and sell their works within a comfortable, friendly, and supportive setting. This one-day, 12-hour event is held two times a year at The Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Local music, featured brews, and other special activities add a distinct flavor and sense of community to this creative showcase.

The next Shadow Art Fair is December 6, 2008, noon to midnight, at the Corner Brewery.

Thanks to everyone that came out to the Winter Shadow last week! We'll be gathering details and deadlines for the 2009 Summer Shadow Art Fair soon— join the mailing list to stay in the loop.

Lots of people have nice things to say about the Shadow Art Fair before and after the event, and we'll be updating our press page soon. In the meantime, here is a post-Shadow Art Fair brief by MIDMI-member Mark, in which he talks about the event, why we do it and where we'd like to see it go.

The Winter Shadow Art Fair is in one week! This winter's Shadow Art Fair is this Saturday, December 6, from noon to midnight at the Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti. In addition to the goods made by our super sweet vendors, also available will be Shadow Art Fair posters and t-shirts featuring this round's winning design by Letterform, all printed up by our sponsor, VGKids.

Admission to the event is 2 cents. Per the Corner Brewery, if you are under 21, you must be accompanied by a parent to be admitted.

Other highlights:
- the special Shadow Brew will be on tap in the evening. This winter's edition is a stout made with chocolate, raspberries, blueberries, beets and other goodnesses.
- the Ann Arbor Film Festival's space will be accompanied by the PLAY gallery's Animation Station, which allows you to make your own animations on-the-spot.
- The Ypsilanti Citizen will be broadcasting live from the Brewery, conducting interviews and covering the event.
- The recipients of our first round of grant-giving will be there (Washtenaw County's CSTS), with a display demonstrating what they were able to do with the grant they received over the summer. They used their funds to support their "Art and Recovery Project."

Hope to see you there!

Have you applied for the Winter Shadow yet, or submitted a poster design? The deadline is October 1!

Sometimes people ask us, What kinds of things are you looking for? Should I apply? We encourage anyone that wants to be involved to apply. However, we strongly encourage applications that propose imaginative or non-traditional use of our event. In past fairs, we've had a shadow puppet show, a monster full of surprises, pictures with a creepy Santa, a foot foto booth, and a giant pooping cat (see our press page!). Anything that can fit into the space that a table would take up or be integrated unobtrusively into the architecture of the Brewery. Think of the most outlandish idea you've had for an installation or performance that doesn't quite fit anywhere. The Shadow Art Fair is the place to give it a try! The Shadow will always be a place to find interesting gifts and meet local artists. Help us make it more than that!

Vendor and Poster Design Applications are up! The deadline for both is October 1. Accepted vendors and the winning poster design will be notified by October 15.

The Winter Shadow Art Fair is scheduled for December 6, 2008, noon to midnight.

This summer's Shadow has come and gone-- thanks to everyone that came out! We had a great time and raised lots of $ for the next round of arts grants. Our press page has been updated with some of the great press and blog posts we received for this event.

We announced the winners of our first round of arts grant money on Saturday, but here they are for the internets: Washtenaw County Community Support and Treatment Services, for their Art and Recovery Project ($500 from SAF, and funds will be matched by Issue Media Group), and Atomic Art Collective, to construct studio space at their new Ann Arbor location ($356). Leftover monies will be rolled over into the next round of grant-giving.

The big day is almost here! This summer's Shadow Art Fair is Saturday, July 19, from noon to midnight at the Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti. About 40 vendors will be there, exhibiting things from zines to coffee to photography to soft sculpture to clothing AND MORE! Check out our full vendor list. Also available will be Shadow Art Fair t-shirts and posters featuring artwork by this summer's poster design winner, Ryan Groendyk.

Admission to the event is 2 cents. This money goes in our arts grant fund, which allows us to support arts in the community. We will be announcing the recipients of the $1027.18-worth of grant money we raised from last December's Shadow Art Fair on Saturday.

Also contributing to the grant fund is sales from the special limited-edition Shadow Brew, which we will be offering again this time around. An all new brew, this beer has been rumored to be called the "Penumbra White Ale."

Live music on the patio will begin at 2pm, and will end at 10pm with a special shadow puppet show by Patrick Elkins, just back from studying shadow puppetry in Indonesia. See the previous news post for more info on which live acts will be performing throughout the day.

Local screen printing shop VGKids will also be doing a "live print" in the beer garden-- screen print a t-shirt for yourself on the spot!

Other special guests include the Dirty Brothers' giant pooping cat...basically, we've got a lot of interesting things going on for this edition of the Shadow Art Fair, and you should come by and check it all out.
